Mellon introduces Gemalto’s eco-friendly portfolio

15/12/2009

An innovative portfolio of eco-friendly products that includes among other things alternative materials and processes for the manufacturing of cards, pos terminals etc.

Mellon Technologies, one of the largest Greek IT companies with a leading role in the electronic transaction1s market, and Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 GTO), a world leader in digital security, are introducing to the Greek market Gemalto’s expanded portfolio of eco-friendly products.

“At Mellon we aim not only to expand and develop our business activity, but also to provide value to the wider natural, structured and human environment in which we operate. Respectively when we choose our suppliers and partners we take into serious consideration the environmental and social profile,” said Triantafyllos Triantafyllou, Sales Director at Mellon Technologies. “This portfolio of all of the new and existing eco friendly product innovations from Gemalto, underscores the company’s commitment in being a responsible global corporate citizen, and will allow us to partner with our customers toward the mutual goal of sustainability.”

Gemalto`s eco friendly product portfolio reduces environmental impact in three key areas:

1. Chlorine free manufacturing materials: In 1997 Gemalto began to move to non-chlorine polymers resulting in the majority of current manufactured products being chlorine free. Some examples of these non-chlorine based products include the Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol (PETG) based card products, the ABS molded cards, the PC TWIN Reader and the small form factor cards.

2. Hazardous substance reduction: Gemalto evaluates and actively looks for ways to reduce the use and disposal of hazardous substances in manufacturing processes. Some examples of this effort include the replacement of inkjet-based card marking with laser inscription and the increased use of vegetable based inks.

3. Promote renewable and recycled material: Gemalto is active in use and promotion of renewable and recycled materials reducing the overall environmental footprint of the production processes. Some examples of how Gemalto has promoted these materials in product development and company programs include the Polylactic acid (PLA) card (a new bio-sourced renewable material derived from corn, sugarcane or potato starch, the paper-based materials for short-term use, such as scratch cards, and the ECOPack (an eco friendly packaging made of 100% recyclable materials for Gemalto fulfilment services).

Gemalto is certified with the ISO 14001:2004 certification and the KEMA certification for power consumption.
